The 1856 presidential election was primarily a race between Democratic candidate James Buchanan, ambassador to the United Kingdom, and Republican John C. Frémont, an explorer and Mexican-American War veteran.

Buchanan won with 45.3 percent of the popular vote to Frémont’s 33.1.
