Benjamin Harrison fans in his home state of Indiana hold up what looks like the world’s largest dorm room pennant in support of his 1888 presidential campaign. In his win against incumbent President Grover Cleveland, Harrison (who campaigned with the slogan “Rejuvenated Republicanism”) actually lost the popular vote, but carried two states that gave him an electoral college edge: New York and Indiana. It was just the third time that had happened (1824 & 1876), and wouldn’t happen again until 2000.
